CONCEPT
‘The Garden’ was born out of acknowledgement of a long history of inequity in women’s reproductive health. My own observations about my personal experiences with late diagnosis in reproductive issues, along with hearing all of my female friends’ tales, flagged concern in the structures and nature of women’s reproductive health in Australia, and further research validated the extreme inequity in this area. I developed an accessable website for young women in Australia to learn about their reproductive in a communal, engaging and concise manner.
"Collective empowerment for women contributes to changing the oppressive and inequitable narrative in women’s health."
Due to the nature of our society and a history of gender bias,
Women's reproductive health has been severely under-researched, under-educated and disregarded, which means that most women barely understand their own bodies and many conditions are left under/misdiagnosed, and this leads to concerning statistics, such as over 70% of women in Australia reporting bias in diagnosis and treatments.
DESIGN SOLUTION
To address this inequity that leads to impact on many women’s
day to day lives, the design solution is an online space with
information displayed in an engaging way for young women to
understand their reproductive system and potential conditions,
as well as share their own experiences. Enabling women to
connect, validate experiences and thus lead to communal
empowerment, are the pillars of the design solution. Not only
does this provide benefit for each individual woman, but
collective empowerment for women contributes to changing
the oppressive and inequitable narrative in women’s health.
PROBLEM SPACE
The research methodology consisted of scholarly research into the problem space, market research, surveying the target audience to validate the design solution, and continuous user testing guiding each iteration.
DEVELOPMENT
Low-fi, Mid-fi and High-fi prototypes were developed over the course of this project for user testing that guided the iterations. Four rounds of user testing aided the development of the website conducting empathy mapping, heuristic analysis, interviews and observation.
RESEARCH
PITCH DECK
An app prototype was developed as an easy, quick access version of the website. The screens are simple buttons to be the easiest and quickest way for the user to access information in their day to day life.
APP DESIGN
APP SCREENS
I decided an Instagram social media account is the fast way to gain an audience. The layout of the Instagram feed is a random mixture of different types of posts with information about women’s bodies, testimonials and website/app promotion. The same colours and font are repeated for a distinct brand identity that aligns with health, empowerment and digital efficiency.
